Three Men Detained Over the Killing of BJP Youth Leader Shivam Singh in Lucknow

Lucknow’s police department announced on Thursday that three individuals were taken into custody for allegedly murdering Shivam Singh, a rising youth leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The incident, which shocked the city, unfolded on the evening of March 22 when Singh was shot outside his residence in the Aliganj area.

According to the police, the three accused—identified as Rohit Kumar, 28, a local shopkeeper; Ankit Sharma, 24, a college student; and Faisal Ahmed, 30, a daily‑wager—were apprehended after a week‑long chase that spanned several neighborhoods. Officers say the suspects were found at a rented flat in Gomti Nagar, where forensic teams recovered the weapon used in the killing.

“We have secured the culprits and the firearm. The investigation is ongoing, and we are still piecing together the exact motive,” said Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajesh Verma during a brief press conference. He added that preliminary inquiries suggest the crime may be linked to a personal dispute, though the possibility of a political undertone has not been ruled out.

Shivam Singh, 35, was known for his energetic outreach to young voters and had recently been appointed state president of the BJP’s youth wing for Lucknow. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief among party members and local residents. “Shivam was a bright, enthusiastic leader. His loss is a heavy blow to our community,” lamented party spokesperson Meera Joshi, who also called for a swift and transparent investigation.

Witnesses near the crime scene reported hearing gunshots followed by frantic shouting. One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, recounted, “It was like a movie scene—people were screaming, and the whole street was in chaos.” The police have so far not disclosed any details about the suspects’ connections to Singh, but they have confirmed that interrogations are underway.

The incident comes at a time when political tension is simmering across Uttar Pradesh, with several parties gearing up for upcoming local elections. Analysts caution that while the case appears to be criminal, any premature political speculation could inflame an already volatile atmosphere.

As the investigation proceeds, the police have urged anyone with additional information to step forward. “Even the smallest tip could prove crucial,” Verma emphasized, before concluding the briefing.
