Three Injured After Vehicle Rollover Shuts Part of Deerfoot Trail

On Saturday morning, just after sunrise, a vehicle suddenly tipped over on the northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail near Peigan Trail. The crash, which involved a midsize SUV, sent the car spinning onto its side and spilling debris across the roadway.

First‑responders arrived within minutes, finding the driver, a passenger, and a motorcyclist who happened to be passing by. All three sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts to more serious bruising. The driver and passenger were taken to the Foothills Medical Centre for further evaluation, while the motorcyclist was treated on‑scene and later escorted to a nearby urgent‑care clinic.

Calgary Police Service confirmed that the cause of the rollover is still under investigation. Early speculation points to a possible loss of control on a slick patch of road, but investigators are waiting for weather data and witness statements before drawing conclusions.

Because of the wreckage and the need to clear the scene safely, the northbound stretch of Deerfoot Trail between Peigan Trail and the 12 Street SW overpass was closed to traffic for several hours. Motorists were directed to use alternative routes, such as Glenmore Trail and Stoney Trail, while signage and a detour were put in place.

“We understand this closure causes inconvenience for commuters, but safety comes first,” said Calgary Police spokesperson Sgt. Maya Lavoie. “Our crews are working as quickly as possible to clear the site and restore normal flow.”

The closure was lifted late in the afternoon after the vehicle was removed, the roadway was swept, and a final safety inspection was completed. Drivers returning to the area were reminded to stay alert, especially during early‑morning hours when visibility can be reduced.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident—or who has dash‑cam footage—to come forward and share any information that could help piece together what happened.
