Three dead after SUV slams into parked semi near Piapot, Saskatchewan

It was a quiet stretch of Highway 1 near the tiny community of Piapot when, just after noon on July 21, a silver SUV barreled into the side of a semi‑truck that was parked on the shoulder. The impact was so forceful that the SUV was ripped apart, sending debris scattering across the road.

First responders arrived within minutes, their lights flashing against the bright prairie sky. Paramedics worked frantically to free the occupants of the SUV, but three of them – all identified as residents of Estevan – were already deceased at the scene. A fourth passenger was pulled out with serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Swift Current for emergency treatment.

Police say the semi‑truck had been stopped for what appeared to be a routine break, its brakes engaged and its lights off. Investigators are still piecing together why the SUV careened into the truck. “We’re looking at every possibility – from driver distraction to mechanical failure,” said RCMP Constable Jenna McLeod, who is leading the inquiry.
