As the North East monsoon looms, Thoothukudi’s civic leadership is leaving no stone unturned, with Mayor Jegan Periyasamy personally assuring citizens of comprehensive and robust preparations. A high-level meeting, bringing together key officials from various critical departments, underscored the city's proactive approach to safeguarding its residents and infrastructure against potential monsoon fury.

The discussions involved representatives from the revenue, police, health, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), fire and rescue services, Public Works Department (PWD), highways, and the municipal corporation. A primary focus of the preparedness strategy is the aggressive desilting and clearing of storm water drains and canals across the city.

This vital exercise aims to enhance water flow, significantly reduce the risk of waterlogging, and prevent urban flooding, particularly in historically vulnerable low-lying areas that have been carefully identified. The Mayor highlighted that these proactive measures are crucial for maintaining urban resilience during heavy rainfall.

Beyond infrastructure, human welfare remains a top priority.

The city has established multiple relief camps, strategically located to provide safe havens for those who may need to evacuate their homes. These camps are fully equipped with essential amenities, including clean drinking water, nutritious food, and readily available medical assistance, ensuring the well-being of displaced individuals.

Emergency response teams are on high alert.

Dedicated units from the Fire and Rescue Services, Police, and local volunteer groups like NCC and NSS are poised for immediate deployment.
