In a heart-wrenching incident that has cast a somber shadow over Karnataka, a four-year-old girl, Radha, from the Koppal district, has tragically succumbed to rabies, two months after enduring a brutal attack by a stray dog. Her untimely death at a Bengaluru hospital serves as a stark and painful reminder of the critical gaps in public health awareness and animal control measures.

The nightmare began approximately two months ago when Radha was viciously mauled by a stray dog.

Hailing from a family of daily wage laborers, her parents, in their earnest but misinformed attempt to care for their child, initially resorted to local remedies at home. This decision, driven by financial constraints and a desperate lack of awareness regarding the severity of rabies, proved to be a fatal delay in seeking proper medical attention.

As Radha's condition steadily deteriorated, exhibiting alarming symptoms consistent with the deadly viral disease, her distraught parents finally rushed her to a private hospital in Koppal.

From there, she was referred to Vani Vilas Hospital in Bengaluru, a desperate journey spanning over 350 kilometers. Despite their fervent hopes, the young girl’s plight continued to worsen, leading to a final transfer to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH).

Tragically, even the specialized care at IGICH could not reverse the irreversible progression of rabies.

The insidious virus, which silently incubates before unleashing its horrifying symptoms, had taken too firm a hold. Radha's brave battle against the disease ended, leaving behind a family shattered by an avoidable loss and a community grappling with the profound implications of this devastating outcome.
