Suddenly, the serene suburban scene was interrupted by a sight straight out of a nature documentary – two zebras, galloping freely, having made a daring break for freedom from Six Flags Great Adventure’s Wild Safari.

These weren't just any zebras; they were Bonnie and Clyde, a duo who would soon etch their names into local legend.

Their escape kicked off a week-long saga that captivated the state and beyond, as authorities and animal experts scrambled to safely return the striped adventurers to their habitat.

The initial alarm was raised on July 14th when staff discovered the pair missing from their designated area within the sprawling 350-acre preserve.

It wasn't long before sightings began pouring in, confirming that Bonnie and Clyde were indeed enjoying an unscheduled tour of Jackson Township. Imagine the surprise of residents encountering these magnificent creatures grazing in fields or trotting along roadsides, a truly surreal experience.

The challenge of recapturing zebras in an unfamiliar environment proved immense.

Zebras are naturally skittish and incredibly fast, making traditional animal wrangling techniques difficult. Interestingly, this wasn't the first time zebras had staged a breakout from the New Jersey safari.

In November 2020, two other zebras named Zulu and Zola also briefly escaped, though their adventure was much shorter, lasting only a few hours before they were safely returned. These incidents highlight the incredible instincts of these animals and the constant vigilance required to manage such a vast and diverse animal park.
