For decades the phenomenon, simply called “The Hum,” has haunted residents from Bristol’s streets in the 1970s to modern‑day suburbs around Oslo. People often describe it as a constant low‑frequency thrum, sometimes felt as a vibration running through the body, and frustratingly, it can be invisible to anyone else in the same room.

Drexl cautions, however, that standard hearing tests might overlook ultra‑fine differences that only a few Hertz apart could matter.

The inner‑ear theory proved more intriguing. Our cochleae constantly generate faint noises – oto‑acoustic emissions – as a by‑product of amplifying incoming sound. Most of us never notice them, but a subset of people can actually hear these emissions. In the study, a handful of participants demonstrated measurable spontaneous oto‑acoustic emissions in the low‑frequency range that matched what they described as the Hum.

Putting the pieces together, the researchers argue that low‑frequency tinnitus is the most plausible explanation for many cases of the Hum. In other words, the hum isn’t out there in the world; it’s a phantom perception generated inside the auditory system, even though it feels utterly external.

This doesn’t rule out genuine environmental sources in some locales – after all, low‑frequency waves travel far and can be hard to locate – but it does suggest that the majority of reported Hums likely have a physiological origin.

The findings add a fresh layer to a puzzle that has haunted ear‑health specialists and conspiracy theorists alike for half a century. As Drexl puts it, “Sometimes the answer is not out there, it’s right inside us.”
