Such is the unsettling tale emerging from Calgary, where the seemingly innocuous act of meeting someone new online has led to grave allegations. Yet, what was intended to be a simple social call, perhaps a first date, reportedly devolved into something deeply disturbing at the man's residence in December of last year.

Police allege that this encounter culminated in a sexual assault. And really, the very next day, the victim, showing immense courage, came forward to report the harrowing experience to authorities. It’s a stark reminder, I think, that even in the pursuit of connection, vulnerability can be exploited, and trust, once given, can be profoundly betrayed.

The man in question, George Walter Vanase, a 78-year-old resident of Calgary, was subsequently arrested this past June 29th. He now faces a charge of sexual assault. This isn't just about one incident, though. Police, with good reason, are voicing concerns that there could be other individuals who may have experienced similar situations. After all, if someone is active on dating sites, it stands to reason they've likely interacted with numerous people.

It’s why the Calgary Police Service has taken the crucial step of appealing to the public. They believe, and rightly so, that Vanase's activity on various dating platforms suggests there may be other victims out there. It’s a plea for courage, honestly, for anyone with information, or those who might have had similar, troubling experiences with Vanase, to step forward and speak with investigators.

The path to justice, and perhaps healing, is often paved with such brave disclosures. George Walter Vanase, for his part, is scheduled to appear in court on July 24th.
