Regardless of your reason for walking, it's impossible to ignore the numerous health benefits it offers. A recent study, however, suggests that not only does the distance you walk play a role in the benefits you receive but so does the speed at which you walk. The study found that walking at an "average" or "normal" pace of two to three miles per hour decreased the risk of certain diseases by 15%, compared to casual walking. Moreover, faster speeds nearly doubled those benefits, with a "brisk" pace of three to four miles per hour lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes by 24%, and a "striding" pace that surpasses four miles per hour showing a 39% decrease in overall risk.
That said, any amount of walking is beneficial, even if it's only for short distances at a relaxed pace. Further research has shown that walking for 15 minutes a day, a minimum of five times a week, can fortify the immune system and fight diseases. Additionally, even if you can't meet the rumored "magic number" of 10,000 steps for optimal health, walking around 2,600 and 2,800 steps daily still offers significant health rewards. Around 7,000 steps can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by over half.
Findings also show that incorporating 20 to 25-minute bursts of intense activity can improve longevity. It was also discovered that climbing stairs five times a day, equivalent to around 50 steps, can decrease cardiovascular disease risk by 20%.
Walking is also praised for its great potential to reduce heart disease risk, regulate blood sugar levels, and more. Remember to try and walk, especially after eating, and have fun with it. For those unsure of how to kick-start their walking habit, there are countless products available to help improve your walking routine.
