Tension Grips Maddur as Ganesh Immersion Turns Violent, Eight Injured and Section 144 Imposed

A festive occasion turned grim in Maddur, Mandya district, as clashes erupted during a Ganesh idol immersion procession, leaving at least eight individuals injured. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday evening, saw police resorting to a lathi-charge to disperse the agitated crowds and subsequently imposing Section 144 in the area to prevent further escalation.

The immersion procession, a traditional ritual marking the end of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, was underway when tensions suddenly flared.

Eyewitnesses reported a sudden outbreak of arguments and physical altercations among participants, which quickly escalated into a more widespread confrontation. The exact trigger for the violence remains under investigation, but the swift deterioration of order prompted immediate police intervention.

In a desperate bid to restore calm, local police forces intervened, attempting to separate the warring factions.

However, the situation spiraled, leading to a lathi-charge by the police to disperse the unruly mob. During the chaos, several individuals sustained injuries, including two police personnel – Constable Jagadish and Head Constable Ningegowda – who were reportedly hurt while trying to manage the crowd.

The remaining injured were members of the public caught in the fracas.

Following the violent outbreak, authorities swiftly moved to impose Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) across the Maddur area. This prohibitory order bans the assembly of four or more people, aiming to prevent any further congregation or potential for renewed conflict.

A heavy police presence has been deployed throughout the town to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents.

Maddur police have registered a case regarding the incident and have launched a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the clashes and identify those responsible.

The injured have been provided with medical attention, and their conditions are being monitored. This unfortunate event has cast a shadow over the festive season, highlighting the need for vigilance and peaceful conduct during public gatherings.
