Tejashwi Yadav Appeals to PM Modi for ₹5,000 Crore Flood Relief in Bihar

On September 7, 2026, the Leader of the Opposition in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, penned a two‑page letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In it, he urged the prime minister to fly to Patna at once, label the raging floods a “national disaster” and unlock a fresh infusion of ₹5,000 crore for relief and rehabilitation.

The situation on the ground is bleak. More than twenty districts are under water, entire villages have been cut off, and thousands of families are clinging to makeshift boats, hoping for the next tide not to swallow what little they have left. Rivers that normally skirt the plains have burst their banks, sweeping away roads, schools and homes worth billions of rupees.

Yadav’s letter stresses that the crisis is not merely a natural calamity. He also warned that the flood has turned basic necessities into luxuries. People are scrambling for clean drinking water, food, medicines and even electricity. Cattle, the livelihood of many rural families, are dying from lack of fodder, pushing an already vulnerable population toward deeper poverty.

While the state chief minister, Samrat Choudhary, has been touring relief camps, Yadav contended that the Union ministries and the local MPs have done little more than offer token gestures. “The people of Bihar deserve a swift, decisive response, not half‑measures that leave them to fend for themselves,” he added.

In calling for a ₹5,000 crore package, Yadav asked for funds to be channelled not only for immediate rescue—boats, pumps, medical camps—but also for long‑term mitigation: strengthening embankments, improving drainage, and setting up robust early‑warning networks to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.

The letter concludes with a plea for compassion and urgency, reminding the central government that every day’s delay costs lives, homes and hope.
