AI is reshaping Indian classrooms – but the human teacher remains irreplaceable.
On Teachers' Day, we reflect on how generative AI is changing the way students learn and why teachers must now focus on critical thinking, empathy, and guiding responsible AI use.
Every year on September 5th India pauses to honour Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s belief that a true teacher “helps us think for ourselves.” This year, however, the celebration comes with a new dilemma: if a student can summon a perfectly‑formatted answer from ChatGPT at 2 a.m., what exactly does a teacher have left to teach?
Picture a typical scenario. A teenager gets a math assignment, pulls out a phone, types, “Explain the quadratic formula like I’m 15,” and within seconds receives a step‑by‑step walkthrough, a couple of practice problems, and even a mini‑quiz. The next day the teacher walks into class not to unpack the formula again, but to point out the subtle mistake the AI made, to ask why that particular explanation might confuse a learner, and to spark a discussion about how we evaluate machine‑generated content.
For generations, teachers were the gatekeepers of knowledge. Then came textbooks, then Google, then YouTube, and now generative AI. Each wave didn’t erase the teacher; it changed the teacher’s role. UNESCO now talks about a “teacher‑AI‑student” dynamic, urging educators to cultivate “human agency and responsible use” rather than merely mastering new tools.
Gen Z has grown up with smartphones and algorithms that never sleep. They binge‑watch short‑form videos, fact‑check teachers on the spot, and expect instant answers. In that context, the competition isn’t another human teacher—it’s an algorithm that can generate a lecture, grade a quiz, and translate a paragraph into any Indian language in a flash.
What AI can do is impressive: personalised explanations, on‑the‑fly quizzes, instant feedback, multilingual support, and a hefty reduction in administrative chores. The Indian Ministry of Education has already signalled the shift, announcing that AI and computational thinking will be introduced from Class 3 onward starting the 2026‑27 academic year, in partnership with CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS and state bodies.
But AI has blind spots. It can’t read a student’s silence, offer a comforting pat on the back, settle a heated debate about history, or model the kind of ethical reasoning that a human mentor provides. Those soft skills—empathy, motivation, conflict resolution—remain squarely in the teacher’s domain.
There’s also a political angle. When an AI is asked to explain a contentious topic—say, the Partition, caste dynamics, or Kashmir—its answer is only as unbiased as the data it was trained on. Who decides which version of history the machine will present? Many educators argue that such complex, contested subjects must stay under human guidance to avoid propagating hidden biases.
India’s national push for AI in education is unmistakable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, pledged to train a crore (10 million) youth in AI skills and to roll out free online coaching for competitive exams. The National Education Policy 2020 already flags AI as a catalyst for economic growth, personalised learning and teacher empowerment.
On the ground, CBSE offers a 15‑hour AI module from Class VI, and AI is now an optional subject for Classes IX‑XII. NCERT has embedded AI into Class XI Computer Science and used machine‑learning tools to translate primary‑level textbooks into 22 Indian languages. Platforms like DIKSHA, SOAR and SWAYAM are sprinkling AI‑driven features—read‑aloud options for the visually impaired, adaptive learning pathways, and free AI courses from IITs and IISc—throughout the ecosystem.
Even global tech leaders are chiming in. Google’s Sundar Pichai, celebrating his alma mater IIT Kharagpur, warned that within five years AI will have moved from labs into the hands of doctors, civil servants and farmers, not just students. The message is clear: AI will be everywhere, but the human touch will still be the glue that holds learning together.
So on this Teachers' Day, while we applaud the marvels of AI, we must also reaffirm Radhakrishnan’s timeless counsel. The real job of a teacher today is less about delivering facts and more about nurturing curiosity, teaching students how to question a machine’s answer, and modelling the kind of responsible, compassionate thinking that no algorithm can replicate.
