Suspicious Fires Ignite West Kelowna, Leaving Residents on Edge

In the early hours of Saturday—July 19, 2026—West Kelowna awoke to a sight that most of us only see on the news: a line of orange flames licking the night sky. Within roughly four hours, four separate fires sprang up within a two‑kilometre stretch that includes Old Okanagan Highway, Shannon Lake Road and, most notably, Kinsmen Park.

Firefighters from the West Kelowna Fire Department, led by Fire Chief Jason Brolund, were on the scene almost immediately. “All four fires were in the same vicinity,” Brolund told reporters, his voice betraying the fatigue that comes with battling blaze after blaze in the height of wildfire season. He added that the close timing and proximity “suggest they could be connected,” though no definitive link had been confirmed at that point.

For residents like Josh Sidhe, the experience was startlingly personal. Sidhe recounted hearing a loud pop, stepping outside, and seeing a “pillar of fire” only ten feet away from his front door. “I grabbed the garden hose, ran back inside, and just waited for help,” he said, a nervous chuckle slipping through as he described the surreal moment.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have now classified the incidents as suspicious and opened a criminal investigation.
