Supreme Court's Landmark Stay Brings Immense Relief to Munnambam Protesters

A wave of profound relief has swept through the coastal village of Munnambam in Kerala, as the Supreme Court delivered a significant interim order, offering a crucial lifeline to hundreds of families battling potential eviction from land they have called home for generations. In a pivotal development, the apex court stayed the operation of key provisions – Sections 4, 5, and 85 – of the contentious Waqf Act, 1995.

This timely judicial intervention has effectively halted, for now, the relentless efforts by the Kerala Waqf Board to take over vast swathes of land, claiming them as Waqf property.

For many of these families, their roots in Munnambam run exceptionally deep, with some having resided on these parcels of land for over six decades.

Their daily lives and livelihoods are intrinsically linked to these plots, which they vehemently assert are not, and never were, Waqf land.
