Stephen Fleming doubts Ben Stokes will come out of retirement for the Ashes

When Stephen Fleming took over as England’s Test head coach he was handed a handful of big questions – not least what to do about Ben Stokes. The all‑rounder announced his retirement from England duties in July, a move that sent shockwaves through the cricketing world.

Fleming, who arrived with a reputation for calm pragmatism, told reporters he has spoken to Stokes several times. “He’s really happy playing for Durham,” Fleming said, a hint of a smile in his voice. “He’s enjoying his cricket there and I don’t see any reason why he would want to turn that decision on its head now.”

Fleming didn’t completely shut the door on a possible comeback – he merely said it would be “a very big ask”. He explained that if Stokes ever felt the pull of international cricket again, it would have to be on his own terms, not because the board or fans were demanding it.

Beyond the Stokes saga, Fleming used the interview to talk about his broader vision. He praised England’s “Bazball” aggression but warned that discipline must keep pace with ambition. “We love the energy, we love the attacking mindset, but we also need to be tidy on the field and respect the opposition,” he said.

Looking ahead, the new coach is already gearing up for a tough winter series against South Africa followed by the home Ashes. He said his goal is simple: “Beat the Aussies and get England back to No. 1.”

For now, though, the message is clear – Ben Stokes is content in the county circuit, and unless something dramatic changes, the Ashes will be fought without him.
