Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader Calls India a ‘Very Special’ Partner

After a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Sri Lanka’s Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa told reporters that the talks were “very constructive, very progressive”. He didn’t hold back – India, he said, has been the first responder whenever Sri Lanka faced a storm, a pandemic or an economic crunch.

He smiled, glanced at the camera and added, “Prime Minister Modi always walks the talk”. The comment felt almost like a friendly pat on the back, acknowledging how New Delhi rushed in aid during the 2022 financial crisis, the COVID‑19 wave and Cyclone Ditwah.

Premadasa went on to map out the many ways the two neighbours cooperate today – from development assistance and trade to government‑to‑government projects and cultural exchanges. “We have a very special relationship, a productive one that meets our mutual interests,” he said, his tone mixing pride with a hint of hopeful ambition.

He was careful to stress that any deepening of ties must respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of both nations. “We want growth that benefits both, without compromising what makes each of us unique,” he added, a subtle reminder that partnership isn’t a one‑way street.

On the economic front, Premadasa said Sri Lanka hopes India will become its largest export destination. He championed balanced free trade, pointing out that Sri Lanka has a lot to learn from the world’s most populous country’s development story.
