The past few days have seen a generous deluge across various southern districts, including Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari.

Places nestled at the base of the majestic Western Ghats, such as Periyar, Peranai, Manjalar, Kodaikanal, Sothuparai, and Viraganoor in Theni and Madurai districts, have recorded particularly impressive rainfall figures. This consistent wet spell is a much-anticipated boon, especially after concerns about water availability earlier in the season.

The most immediate and impactful consequence of this bountiful rain is the dramatic surge in water levels across the region's lifeline reservoirs.

The iconic Vaigai dam, a vital source of irrigation and drinking water for multiple districts, has witnessed its water level climb steadily, reaching an impressive 65 feet – a mere 5 feet shy of its full capacity of 71 feet. With such rapid inflows, authorities have prudently begun releasing surplus water, a testament to the reservoir's robust health.

Similarly, the Periyar dam's water level has ascended to 134.60 feet against its 142-foot capacity, with inflows recorded at 2,056 cusecs.

The Mullaperiyar dam, another critical water body, also registered a significant increase, reaching 120.35 feet.
