South Zone skipper Tilak Varma confirms KL Rahul will sit out the Duleep Trophy final

On the eve of the Duleep Trophy showdown between East Zone and South Zone, South Zone captain Tilak Varma had a rather plain‑spoken announcement for the media in Chennai – KL Rahul, the India Test vice‑captain, won’t be in the playing XI.

Varma, speaking to reporters, simply said, “KL bhai isn’t there,” a comment that left fans scratching their heads as the BCCI had earlier asked Rahul to turn out for the final. The reason for his absence wasn’t spelled out, but the message was crystal clear – Rahul will miss the title clash.

Meanwhile, the board’s other requests have been honoured. Both Devdutt Padikkal and Mohammed Siraj have been handed the green light and will don the South Zone colours in what promises to be a tightly‑contested finale.

Varma was quick to praise the two additions. “Having Devdutt in the side really strengthens our batting line‑up. The form he’s shown in the last couple of games has been fantastic, so it’s a big boost for us,” the skipper noted, his eyes lighting up at the thought of Padikkal’s recent centuries against Sri Lanka.

He added, “Siraj’s experience, coupled with Padikkal’s run‑making, will be hugely helpful, especially for the younger guys in the squad. Their current form is impressive and they’ll be able to share a lot of know‑how.”

Padikkal, indeed, has been in red‑hot form – two centuries in a two‑match Test series against Sri Lanka only a few weeks ago underline his class. Siraj, on the other hand, brings the kind of pace and big‑match temperament that can swing a game in South Zone’s favour.

While Rahul’s omission might be a let‑down for some, the South Zone camp seems upbeat, banking on the blend of seasoned pace and fresh batting firepower to clinch the trophy.

As the final draws near, all eyes will be on the young talent to see if they can rise to the occasion and make the most of the opportunity left by Rahul’s absence.
