Smoke Plume Over Tracy Sparks Concern as Small Brush Fire Rages Monday Morning

Early Monday, just before sunrise, a brush fire broke out on the edge of a rural tract southeast of Tracy. By the time sunrise painted the sky, a dense column of smoke was already drifting over the town, prompting a few startled commuters to pause and stare.

Cal Fire crews, backed by local fire‑department volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and drove straight to the source. The fire, which officials estimate had scarred roughly 300 acres of dry scrub, was fed by a combination of gusty winds and the season’s lingering drought‑parched vegetation.

While the flames themselves were largely confined to the brush, the visible plume was enough to raise eyebrows. "You could see it from the freeway," said one resident, who stopped for a coffee on the way to work. "It looked like a giant grey finger reaching up into the sky."

Luckily, no homes were directly threatened, and evacuation orders were limited to a couple of nearby structures as a precaution. The fire’s perimeter was gradually pushed back as water dropped from helicopters and ground crews created fire‑lines with hand tools and bulldozers.

By mid‑morning, the worst of the blaze was under control, though the lingering haze lingered for a while longer, reminding drivers to keep their windows closed. Officials reminded the public that even a relatively small fire can produce a noticeable smoke plume, especially when the wind decides to play along.

Cal Fire’s incident commander, Lieutenant Maria Gonzales, urged the community to stay vigilant: "If you see any new smoke or flames, give us a call right away. Early reporting can make all the difference."
