Shocking Gold Shortage Rocks Vaikom Mahadeva Temple: Audit Uncovers Major Discrepancies

The revered Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, one of Kerala's most iconic spiritual centers, is currently at the heart of a startling controversy following the discovery of a significant gold shortage. A recent audit by the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has brought to light a substantial discrepancy, revealing that nearly 30 sovereigns of gold, valued at an estimated Rs 17.75 lakh, are unaccounted for.

This alarming finding stems from a meticulous comparison between the temple's current gold reserves and its original inventory records dating back to 1975.

The audit indicates that while the historic register documented approximately 2.2 kilograms of gold, the present stock falls short by a concerning 296.880 grams, bringing the total current weight to just over 1.9 kilograms. Among the missing items is believed to be a significant portion of the 'prabhamandalam,' a sacred and ornate gold ornament.

In response to this grave discovery, the TDB has promptly initiated a comprehensive and transparent re-inventory process.

Devaswom Commissioner B.S. Prakash and TDB President M.P. Govindan Nair have personally overseen the commencement of this crucial exercise, forming a dedicated special team to conduct a thorough count. This team includes an official from the Thrissur Land Records Office, ensuring an independent and authoritative assessment of the temple's precious assets.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, it has emerged that discrepancies in the temple's gold reserves were also noted during an audit conducted in 2013-14.

However, the findings of that previous audit were reportedly not made public, nor were the issues fully addressed, raising questions about past accountability and oversight.

TDB President M.P. Govindan Nair has assured the public that stringent action will be taken against anyone found responsible for the irregularities once the current detailed inventory is complete.

The ongoing investigation aims to shed full light on how such a significant shortage occurred and to implement measures to prevent any future occurrences.
