Shady Side Academy Golfers Capture Long-Awaited WPIAL Team Championship

After years of near misses and the sting of past defeats, the Shady Side Academy boys golf team has finally ascended to the pinnacle of WPIAL Class 2A golf, claiming their first team championship in a remarkable 16 years. This victory is more than just a title; it’s a testament to perseverance, teamwork, and the sweet taste of redemption.

The journey to the top was paved with diligent practice and an unyielding desire to succeed.

Just last year, the team agonizingly finished second by a mere stroke, a bitter memory that fueled their resolve throughout the current season. This year, they left no doubt, dominating the championship held at Cedarbrook Golf Course and clinching the title with a commanding score of 308, a comfortable 14 strokes ahead of runner-up Uniontown.

Coach Tony Mengine, a veteran presence who has guided the team through its highs and lows, beamed with pride as he reflected on the win.

"This feels really good," Mengine remarked. "We’ve been close so many times. It was nice to be able to finish it off and finally bring the hardware home." He emphasized the collective effort, noting how the boys consistently worked hard, practiced under pressure, and supported one another every step of the way.

The team's standout individual performances underscored their depth and talent.

Junior Wes Warden led the charge with an impressive 73, followed closely by sophomore Ryan Young, who carded a 76. Senior Thompson Lau contributed a solid 79, while junior Giuseppe Certelli rounded out the top four counting scores with an 80. Freshman Jamie Vlahos also played a crucial role, posting an 82, showcasing the team's strong foundation for future success.

For the players, the victory brought a wave of emotions.

"It’s a huge relief and just so special," expressed Wes Warden, highlighting the significance of overcoming previous setbacks. Ryan Young echoed this sentiment, recalling the "bitter taste" of last year's narrow loss. "To finally get it this year, especially by a good margin, it’s just an amazing feeling.

We’ve all worked so hard for this," Young added, his voice brimming with satisfaction.

Giuseppe Certelli, another key contributor, articulated the team's shared conviction: "We definitely earned it." This championship is a culmination of countless hours on the range, strategic course management, and an unbreakable bond forged through shared aspirations.
