Cappu Films brings Stas Mareev’s ‘Overstake’ to Busan with AI‑enhanced visuals and a fresh sales push
Hong‑Kong’s Cappu Films is handling worldwide sales for the action‑packed sci‑fi thriller ‘Overstake,’ now being rebuilt with generative AI to reshape its world for the Busan International Film Festival market.
Hong‑Kong‑based sales outfit Cappu Films announced this week that it will represent the sci‑fi action thriller “Overstake” at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents & Film Market. The twist? The film’s visual world is being re‑imagined with generative AI, a move the director says lets him reach a scale that was previously impossible.
“‘Overstake’ is a chance to return to a film I already directed and rebuild its world at a scale that was out of reach before,” writer‑director Stas Mareev explained in an exclusive interview. “The performances and story stay the backbone, but AI lets us rethink the environments, the action, the whole visual language while keeping the human core intact.”
The premise is straightforward yet tense: a wounded veteran is thrust into a deadly betting game that gives him just two hours to sprint across an industrial city and keep his ex‑wife alive. Meanwhile, strangers receive cryptic offers on their phones—some to help him, others to stop him. The game’s shadowy organizers turn the desperate chase into a live‑streamed spectacle, raising the stakes both on‑screen and for the audience.
Leading the cast are Konstantin Adaev, Vika Tokareva, Oleg Chernov, Konstantin Sidikhin, Denis Starkov and Sergey Russkin. Their performances, Mareev assures, remain the film’s heart. The AI work, still in progress, will augment those performances with fully rendered cityscapes, dynamic lighting and other visual flourishes that were previously only hinted at in the original shoot.
Janice Woo, a senior executive at Cappu, expressed confidence in the project, noting, “We’ve handled international sales for many films in this genre, and sci‑fi and action are particular strengths for us. Stas’s promo impressed us, and we’re eager to introduce the film to our distribution partners in Busan.” Buyers at the market can expect to see a polished promo and a handful of completed AI‑enhanced sequences, giving a glimpse of the final product.
“Overstake” isn’t the only title Cappu is showcasing. Their Busan slate also includes the Slamdance‑capped drama “Banr,” the spy thriller “Operation Doolittle,” martial‑arts flick “Lion Fist,” and even a tongue‑in‑cheek action comedy “Zombie Plane” starring Vanilla Ice, Sophie Monk and Chuck Norris. But it’s the AI‑driven makeover of “Overstake” that has industry insiders buzzing, hinting at a possible new workflow for genre filmmaking.
Whether the AI‑enhanced visuals will translate into box‑office success remains to be seen, but for now the combination of gritty storytelling and cutting‑edge technology gives “Overstake” a distinct edge as it heads to buyers in Busan.
