Saskatoon's Speed Cameras Are Officially Making a Comeback

Well, folks, it looks like a familiar sight is making its return to Saskatoon's roadways. Those photo speed enforcement cameras, you know the ones, are officially making a comeback. After a brief hiatus and a bit of a vendor change-up, the Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) program is kicking into high gear again, with the new equipment already starting to pop up around the city.

If you've driven on Circle Drive recently, specifically between College Drive and Attridge Drive, you might have already spotted the first of these new installations. Unlike the old boxes we were used to, these fresh cameras are pole-mounted, giving them a bit of a different look. It's a clear signal that the Photo Speed Enforcement program is back on track, overseen now by Global Traffic Group, who are currently busy installing all the necessary gear.

Now, why the switch, you ask? Apparently, SGI's previous agreement with Verra Mobility Systems wrapped up earlier than anticipated. So, while the program itself isn't new, it's essentially a reboot with a fresh vendor taking the reins. It's good to know that even with the new team and equipment, some things are staying consistent – and that’s pretty important for drivers, I think.

For starters, you won't need to learn any new camera locations. SGI has confirmed that the reinstallation is happening at the very same spots where the cameras operated before. So, no surprises there on the geography front. And perhaps even more reassuring for many, the fines you might incur for speeding haven't changed either. It’s the same rules, same penalties, just with new technology doing the monitoring.

While the first camera is already visible and others are surely on their way, SGI hasn't pinned down an exact date for when all the cameras will be fully installed and, crucially, operational. They've simply stated that we can expect them to be in service "soon." So, it's probably a good idea to start being mindful of those speed limits, especially in those familiar enforcement zones, even if the "on" switch hasn't been flipped city-wide just yet. After all, safety on our roads is what this is all ultimately about, right?
