The warning isn’t abstract. In April, a 16‑year‑old boy from the Mission District died after taking what was thought to be a harmless pill. The tragic loss set off a police investigation that soon uncovered more than 20,000 counterfeit tablets, all laced with the new drug.

Two individuals have now been charged, and the district attorney’s office says it will pursue “aggressive prosecution” to send a clear message. “So many times we have been demonized, we have been criticized by those who say we shouldn’t hold those who sell these drugs accountable,” DA Brooke Jenkins said, her tone mixing frustration with resolve.

Health experts caution that cychlorphine is designed to look exactly like a trusted pharmaceutical – think bright‑colored caps or familiar brand names – making it easy for an unsuspecting user to swallow a lethal dose. The drug often spreads through informal networks, passed hand‑to‑hand among friends who assume it’s just a regular prescription.

Officials are urging anyone who thinks they’ve taken a legitimate medication to watch for warning signs: sudden drowsiness, trouble breathing, or a rapid heartbeat. If something feels off, call emergency services right away.
