San Diego’s frontline defenders delivered a resounding blow to international drug trafficking networks in August 2023, intercepting a staggering $24 million worth of illicit narcotics. This monumental effort by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and Border Patrol agents underscores their unwavering commitment to safeguarding communities from dangerous substances flooding across the border.

The sheer scale of these interdictions paints a stark picture of the relentless pressure on the U.S.-Mexico border.

From the bustling ports of entry like San Ysidro and Otay Mesa to the remote stretches between official crossings, law enforcement professionals worked tirelessly, seizing vast quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and marijuana – drugs that fuel addiction, crime, and despair.

Highlighting the severity of the crisis, fentanyl accounted for the largest portion of the seizures, both in weight and street value.

Over 3,600 pounds of this deadly synthetic opioid, with an estimated street value exceeding $16.5 million, were successfully pulled from circulation. This immense quantity represents thousands of potential overdose deaths averted, reinforcing the critical importance of CBP's vigilance. Notably, the fiscal year 2023 total for fentanyl seizures by CBP through July already surpassed the entire amount interdicted in 2022, signaling an alarming escalation in trafficking attempts.

Beyond fentanyl, the month of August saw significant victories against other dangerous drugs: over 1,500 pounds of methamphetamine, valued at approximately $3.3 million, were seized; more than 1,200 pounds of cocaine, worth an estimated $2.3 million, were intercepted; and over 440 pounds of heroin, carrying a street value of approximately $1.6 million, were also confiscated.

Even marijuana, with over 1,200 pounds seized at an estimated value of $0.4 million, contributed to the comprehensive tally.

These illicit substances were discovered through a variety of cunning concealment methods, ranging from hidden compartments within vehicles attempting to cross at official ports of entry, to elaborate human smuggling attempts.

The unwavering dedication and advanced detection techniques employed by CBP officers and Border Patrol agents were instrumental in uncovering these sophisticated schemes, often involving detailed inspections and intelligence-led operations.
