Sacramento Firefighters Join Multi‑Agency Effort on Floriston Blaze

When the Floriston Fire ignited close to the California‑Nevada state line, the flames quickly outgrew the capacity of the local agencies. By mid‑afternoon on Wednesday, talks had already begun about bringing in additional help.

At about 4 p.m., the Sacramento Regional Incident Management Team got the green light. The plan? To take over fire‑ground coordination at 7 a.m. the next morning. The team is a mash‑up of crews from Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Sacramento Fire Department, Cal Fire, and partners from Amador and El Dorado counties, among others, according to incident spokesperson Chris Vestal.

What will these newcomers actually do? First, they’ll draft a fresh incident action plan, set up a base camp and make sure everyone knows the lay of the land. Logistics will be a big part of the job – think food, water, equipment, and even sleeping arrangements for the firefighters who will be on site for days.

“Large wildfires in remote, rugged terrain often demand resources that outstrip what a single jurisdiction can provide,” Vestal explained. “That’s why California’s mutual‑aid system is so vital.” By rotating fresh crews in, the veteran firefighters already battling the blaze can finally catch some sleep.

Vestal anticipates the deployment will stretch at least a week. Before hitting the line, each crew will receive a briefing covering everything from weather forecasts and topography to safety protocols.

The effort underscores how interconnected fire‑fighting resources have become across the state, especially as climate‑driven fires become more frequent and severe.
