Nail testing works differently: as nails grow, they trap drug metabolites in layers of keratin, creating a timeline that can stretch back several months. Judges sometimes order it when they want a longer‑look‑back period or a method that’s harder to tamper with.

Judge Kyle Hedrick explained during the hearing that the court was looking for “the longest scientifically supported look‑back period.” In practice, that means Ryan’s nail clippings could reveal any kratom use from weeks or even months ago, far beyond what a urine sample would show.

The reality‑TV star has a documented history of substance‑abuse problems—multiple arrests, a DUI conviction, and several stints in court‑ordered rehab. In 2023, he was arrested for probation violations after a drug‑fueled spiral that contributed to his divorce from Mackenzie. He later claimed sobriety, returned to work as a mechanic and on MTV, remarried, and welcomed a fourth child.
