According to a ProPublica investigation released on Monday, a Russian billionaire with close ties to President Vladimir Putin helped pay for a sizable portion of the celebrations surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding to Bettina Anderson. The man in question, Umar Kremlev – who also heads the International Boxing Association – allegedly contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars toward a private‑island resort stay and a fireworks display in the Bahamas.

The report draws on financial records, plus interviews with three people who were near the festivities. Those sources say Kremlev’s money came through an entity linked to the boxing federation he runs. The exact amount wasn’t disclosed, but the expenses covered the rental of the island venue, a lavish post‑wedding party, and the fireworks that lit up the night sky.

When ABC News reached out, neither the White House nor a Trump Jr. spokesperson disputed the claim. Instead, they pointed to an Instagram post by Anderson that framed the assistance as a “generous wedding gift from a friend.” "Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us after our wedding," Anderson wrote, adding that the event was meant to be a “fun weekend with friends.”

Anderson also pushed back against what she called a politicized narrative. "It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from," she said, insisting there was “no conspiracy, no mystery.”

ProPublica noted that Kremlev had recently traveled to China as part of a delegation accompanying President Putin, and that the Russian leader had awarded him the state Order of Friendship. Those connections have raised eyebrows, especially given the Kremlin’s documented interference in U.S. elections in 2016 and 2020.

Trump Jr., who continues to play a major role in the family’s business empire and political strategy, told the outlet that he and Kremlev are “personal friends” who met through mutual acquaintances in the hunting and boxing worlds. Kremlev’s press office echoed that sentiment, describing the relationship as “friendly” and saying the two first met a few years ago.

The intimate guest list – which reportedly included a “large group” of Russian attendees – made Kremlev’s presence feel odd to some insiders. Even former President Donald Trump did not attend the Bahamas celebration, citing “government circumstances” and the timing of the war in Iran as reasons for staying in Washington.
