Three sources familiar with the arrangements confirmed the flow of funds, though they stopped short of explaining why Kremlev chose to foot the tab.

When asked about the story, the White House and a spokesperson for the Trump family pointed to an Instagram post from Bettina Anderson. In it, she called Kremlev a “dear friend” who “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us after our wedding.” She added that the festivities were meant to be a “fun weekend with friends” and insisted there was “no conspiracy, no mystery.”

Trump Jr.’s own spokesperson echoed the sentiment, describing Kremlev as a personal friend met through a mutual acquaintance in the hunting and boxing worlds. “Umar is not a business associate,” the representative told ProPublica, “they simply share a love of the outdoors.”

The timing of Kremlev’s generosity raises eyebrows. The oligarch had recently traveled to China as part of a delegation that accompanied Putin, and Moscow awarded him the Order of Friendship not long before the wedding. Given the Russian government’s documented efforts to meddle in U.S. elections, any financial link to a member of the Trump family is bound to attract scrutiny.

Donald Trump himself did not attend the ceremony. He cited “government circumstances” and his focus on the ongoing war in Iran as reasons for staying in Washington, despite earlier hints that he might try to make it. The president’s absence, combined with the presence of a high‑profile Russian guest, added another layer of intrigue to an already high‑profile family event.
