Russian Oligarch Funds Part of Donald Trump Jr.’s Bahamas Wedding Celebration, Report Says

According to a new ProPublica investigation, a Russian oligarch who runs the International Boxing Association – Umar Kremlev – covered a sizable chunk of the celebrations that followed Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding to Bettina Anderson on a private Bahamian island.

The report says Kremlev’s payments included the rental of the island itself, a fireworks display and a host of other party costs that added up to “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” The money, ProPublica says, appears to have come from a company linked to the boxing federation where Kremlev serves as president.

When ABC News reached out, the White House and a Trump Jr. spokesperson pointed to an Instagram post by Anderson. In it she described Kremlev’s contribution as “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend,” and stressed that the weekend was meant to be a private, family‑only affair that later turned into a “fun weekend with friends.”

Anderson’s caption also pushed back against what she called a “political or sinister” spin on the story, writing, “NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY.” She added that the couple had already decided to marry before the trip and that the extra celebrations were simply an unexpected bonus.

While the Trump family has not disputed that Kremlev paid for part of the festivities, they have not explained why a man closely tied to President Vladimir Putin would finance a personal event for the president’s son.

ProPublica notes that Kremlev recently traveled with Putin’s delegation to China and was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship, underscoring his high‑level connections. The outlet also points out that the Russian government has a documented history of trying to influence U.S. elections, which adds a layer of curiosity to the generosity.

According to a spokesperson, the two men met through a mutual friend in the hunting world and bonded over boxing and the outdoors; there is no known business relationship between them. Kremlev’s press office confirmed that the friendship is “friendly” and dates back a couple of years.

Even Donald Trump himself was absent from the wedding, citing “government circumstances” and his focus on the Iran situation as reasons for staying in Washington rather than joining the Bahamas celebration.

The intimate guest list, which reportedly included several other Russian attendees, left some observers wondering about the broader implications of such a high‑profile social link. As of now, no further comment has been provided by Kremlev or his representatives.
