Rivers Swell, Villages on Alert: Sathanur Dam Releases Water Amidst Torrential Inflows

A critical flood alert has been sounded for 15 villages nestled along the banks of the Thenpennai river in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvannamalai district. The cause for concern is the Sathanur Dam, which has commenced releasing surplus water following incessant heavy rainfall across its catchment areas, pushing the reservoir dangerously close to its full capacity.

District authorities and the Public Works Department (PWD) are urging residents in the identified villages to exercise extreme caution and take necessary safety precautions.

The Sathanur Dam, a vital lifeline for the region, has seen a dramatic rise in its water levels. With a maximum capacity of 119 feet, the dam's level had surged to a precarious 118.70 feet, necessitating the controlled release of water to manage the overflowing inflows and prevent uncontrolled breaches.

The affected villages, all located downstream along the path of the Thenpennai river, include Thiruvallur, Athipadi, Thatchampattu, Karapattu, Kilkothur, Kuttakarai, Marur, Vengikkal, Kanamalai, Perumbakkam, Kilnathur, Aniyalai, Paliyapattu, Thozhupedu, and Melvanakambadi.

These communities are now on high alert, with warnings disseminated through local channels and public announcements.

Residents have been strictly advised to move to higher, safer grounds and to secure their livestock and valuable belongings. They are also strongly cautioned against venturing near the river banks, which are expected to experience significantly increased water flow and strong currents.

Fishing activities and any form of water sports or recreational activities along the river are strictly prohibited until further notice.

The district administration, in close coordination with PWD officials, is continuously monitoring the situation, tracking water levels both at the dam and along the river course.

Emergency response teams have been activated and are on standby to address any unforeseen circumstances. Public safety remains the paramount concern as officials work diligently to manage the water release and safeguard the lives and property of the communities residing in the river's basin.
