Congress poised to win Goa in 2027, says Telangana CM Revanth Reddy
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy told a crowd in Goa that the Congress will capture the state in the 2027 Assembly polls, warning that tiny parties are being propped up by the BJP to fracture the anti‑BJP vote.
Speaking at the Congress‑organised “Goy Rakhonn Yatra” in Goa, Telangana’s chief minister Revanth Reddy went out on a limb, saying he felt the same surge of optimism in the coastal state that he saw in Telangana before the 2023 polls. He’s betting that the Congress hand symbol will once again become the state’s favourite banner in the 2027 Assembly elections.
Reddy didn’t hold back on the BJP. He argued that a handful of fledgling regional outfits that have sprung up lately are nothing more than the party’s “B‑team”, designed to split the anti‑BJP vote. “Any vote you give to those smaller parties is, in effect, a vote for the BJP,” he warned, urging Goans to stick with the familiar hand symbol.
Using a familiar Ramayan analogy, the CM painted the BJP as the ten‑headed Ravan, dividing people for its own gain, while the Congress, he said, played the role of Ram – the only force capable of restoring unity. “If you want to defeat Ravan, back Ram,” he said, a line that drew a few chuckles from the crowd.
He also turned a spotlight on Goa’s incumbent chief minister, Pramod Sawant, whom he mock‑called “Property Sawant”. According to Reddy, Sawant’s administration is busy handing over Goan land to outsiders and turning a blind eye to a growing drug problem that is, in his words, turning the state into a “den of drugs”. “Why is the drug‑free mission of the centre not being implemented here? Because you are profiting from it,” he demanded.
Reddy recounted a conversation with a young Goan who complained about lack of jobs and the lure of narcotics as an escape. He contrasted that with his own state, where the “EAGLE” force – a special police unit he set up after taking office in 2023 – has been cracking down on drug networks. “We even sent a team to Goa and uncovered a big smuggling ring,” he said, hinting that similar action is needed north of the Western Ghats.
On the national front, the Telangana chief minister didn’t shy away from slamming the Modi‑led government. He accused the Union government of meddling with the Election Commission of India through the “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) exercise, allegedly wiping out voters from Dalit, Adivasi and minority communities who might oppose the BJP. “They are destroying our democracy, one voter roll at a time,” he claimed.
Reddy explained why he was speaking on behalf of Rahul Gandhi at the event: Gandhi, he said, is stuck in Delhi directing the party’s fight against the centre, and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge asked Reddy to convey the message to Goan workers. “I’m just the messenger,” he added, noting that Gandhi’s appeal to youth and opposition is a key part of the Congress strategy.
Wrapping up, Reddy congratulated Goa’s opposition leader Yuri Alemao and state Congress president Girish Chodankar for organising the yatra, and sent warm wishes from Telangana. “We saw the same hope in Telangana before we won in 2023. That hope is alive here too,” he said, ending on a note of solidarity and a call for Goans to choose the hand symbol on election day.
