Repeat Offender Faces Severe Charges After Brutal Home Invasion and Robbery Spree in Buffalo

A 22-year-old Buffalo man, Devonte J. Smith, is now being held without bail, facing a litany of serious felony charges after allegedly embarking on a violent crime spree that included the brutal beating and robbery of an 80-year-old man in his home. The string of alleged offenses has cast a stark light on the complex challenges surrounding repeat offenders and public safety in the community.

The most egregious of the accusations centers on a harrowing home invasion that occurred on August 31, 2022, on Linwood Avenue.

Prosecutors detailed how Smith allegedly forced his way into the residence of an elderly man. The victim was not only robbed of credit cards, cash, and even a handgun, but was also subjected to a violent assault, leaving him tied up and severely beaten. The 80-year-old sustained extensive injuries, requiring significant medical attention in the aftermath of the terrifying ordeal.

This act of violence against a vulnerable senior citizen has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting a deeply disturbing disregard for human life and safety.

The following days saw Smith allegedly continue his criminal activities. On September 1, a convenience store located on Elmwood Avenue fell victim to an armed robbery.

Just a day later, on September 2, another convenience store, this time on Delaware Avenue, was also allegedly robbed. These incidents demonstrate a brazen and escalating pattern of criminal behavior that terrorized local businesses and residents.

Adding to the gravity of the current charges is Smith’s extensive and troubling criminal history.

Despite facing accusations of serious crimes, including allegedly shooting at police in 2021, he had previously been released on bail multiple times. In May 2022, he was released on just $1,000 bail after the alleged police shooting incident. He also secured bail for another alleged shooting. Furthermore, Smith had a history of violent offenses as a juvenile and was on probation for a 2019 conviction of attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

His most recent brush with the law before the current crime spree saw him arrested in July for reckless endangerment and illegal handgun possession, yet again leading to his release on bail. The Erie County District Attorney's Office has now secured Smith's detention without bail, recognizing the severe threat he poses to public safety.
