Remembering James Albert Espinos: A Life Woven with Intellect, Dedication, and Unconditional Love

It is with a heavy heart we share the news of James Albert Espinos's peaceful passing on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at the age of 79. A true gentleman, James leaves behind a legacy defined by his sharp mind, generous spirit, and an enduring devotion to his family. Though his earthly journey concluded in Delavan, Wisconsin, James was, at heart, a Chicagoan through and through, carrying the spirit of the Windy City wherever he went.

Born into the bustling heart of Chicago on January 29, 1944, James was the cherished son of Albert and Margaret (Schultz) Espinos. He grew up navigating the city's vibrant streets, attending St. Mel's High School where he graduated with the class of 1962. His thirst for knowledge led him to Loyola University, where he earned his MBA, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career.

James's commitment to service was evident early on; he bravely answered the call of duty, serving two tours in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His courage and dedication during this challenging period were a testament to his character, a quiet strength that defined him throughout his life.

Professionally, James was a master of numbers, a highly respected accountant who spent a significant portion of his career at Zenith Electronics. Later, he brought his financial acumen and compassionate heart to the non-profit sector, serving as CFO for the Northwestern University Settlement House in Evanston. This shift, you might say, perfectly encapsulated James's blend of professional excellence and his desire to contribute meaningfully to the world around him.

However, what truly illuminated James's life, and indeed, brought him the most joy, was his family. For an incredible 50 years, he shared a beautiful and steadfast partnership with his beloved wife, Sandra. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was a proud and loving father to David (Nicole) and Sarah (Matthew) Lauer, instilling in them values of integrity and kindness. And then there were his grandchildren—Dylan, Samantha, Alexander, Olivia, and Isabella—who brought an undeniable sparkle to his eyes, each one a source of immense pride and affection.

James was also a loving brother to Patricia (the late Ron) Drobena, William (the late Patricia) Espinos, and Margaret (the late Peter) Sineni, sharing a lifetime of memories and unbreakable bonds. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of his extended family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Beyond his professional and familial roles, James was a man of diverse interests. He was an avid reader, particularly drawn to history, a quiet observer of the financial markets, and, yes, he certainly enjoyed a good round of golf. He found immense pleasure in nurturing his garden and embarked on countless adventures with Sandra, exploring the wonders of Europe, the serene beauty of Hawaii and Alaska, and the relaxed luxury of cruises. James was known for his kindness, his generous spirit, his sharp wit, and an intelligence that was both profound and approachable.

Though James has now embarked on his final journey, the echoes of his laughter, his insightful conversations, and the warmth of his presence will undoubtedly resonate in the hearts of all who loved him. While private services will be held to honor his memory, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered for the American Cancer Society, a cause close to their hearts.
