Remembering Gary A. Cusson: A Life Well-Lived, Deeply Loved

Gary, a beloved husband, cherished father, and doting grandfather, left us peacefully on March 10, 2024, at the age of 75. His departure leaves a void that will be keenly felt by all who had the immense privilege of knowing him, and honestly, that’s quite a lot of people.

Born in Hartford, CT, on August 15, 1948, to the late John and Eleanor Cusson, Gary spent his formative years in New Britain, graduating from New Britain High School in 1966. He then went on to earn his degree in Finance from the University of Connecticut in 1970, a place he held dear, especially when it came to Huskies basketball. He truly loved his Huskies, win or lose!

Gary's professional life was marked by unwavering dedication and integrity. For over 35 years, he served as a respected financial advisor at Financial Solutions Group in Hartford. He wasn't just managing portfolios; he was a trusted confidant, guiding countless families through their financial journeys with a steady hand and keen insight. His clients weren't just clients; they were people he genuinely cared about, and he always went the extra mile to ensure their peace of mind.

But perhaps what truly defined Gary was his rich life outside of work. He was the devoted husband of Mary (Smith) Cusson for an incredible 50 years—a true testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two wonderful children: David Cusson and his wife Lisa, and Sarah (Cusson) Johnson and her husband Mark. His world expanded even further with the arrival of his adored grandchildren, Emily and Matthew Johnson, who brought him immeasurable joy and, frankly, a lot of fun. He was also a loving brother to Susan (Cusson) Davis.

You’d often find Gary pursuing his many passions. He was an avid golfer, always eager for a round, even if it meant braving a bit of an early morning chill. His garden, particularly his meticulously cared-for roses, was a source of quiet joy and pride. Summers were synonymous with Cape Cod, where he cherished teaching Emily and Matthew the art of fishing, creating those priceless family memories. And let’s not forget his talent for woodworking; many of his friends and family treasure the beautiful, handcrafted pieces he created.

Beyond his immediate family and hobbies, Gary was a pillar in his West Hartford community. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Peter Claver Church, generously serving on its finance committee. He also gave his time weekly to the local food pantry, always with a warm smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He was, quite simply, a gentleman through and through—known for his quiet strength, thoughtful nature, and a wonderfully dry wit that could always bring a smile to your face. His laughter, you know, was just infectious.

Gary leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and profound kindness. He taught us the value of hard work, the beauty of family, and the importance of giving back.
