Regina's Roads Get a High-Tech Upgrade: New Speed Cameras Installed for Enhanced Safety

Heads up, Regina drivers! If you’ve been out and about recently, you might have noticed some fresh equipment popping up on the side of the road. The City of Regina just announced that it’s upgrading its automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras at three rather well-known, high-traffic locations across the city. Think of it as a safety refresh, if you will, for some of our busiest stretches of road, aiming to curb those lead-footed moments.

Now, it’s important to clarify right away: these aren’t entirely new enforcement spots. Instead, the city is replacing the older ASE cameras that have, well, simply reached the end of their working life. You know how technology goes, don't you? It just eventually needs an upgrade to keep performing optimally. So, while the familiar presence of speed enforcement remains, the hardware behind it is getting a significant boost. The folks at Jenoptik are the manufacturers of this shiny new gear, ensuring that the enforcement continues seamlessly and effectively.

So, when can we expect these new eyes on the road to be fully operational? The city is aiming for early July 2024. Until then, though, don't put the pedal to the metal just yet! The existing cameras are still very much active and keeping watch, so you'll definitely want to keep those speeds in check. It's a carefully phased transition, ensuring there’s no gap in our community's safety monitoring efforts.

Where exactly are these refreshed camera systems being installed? They're strategically placed in areas that have, unfortunately, seen their fair share of incidents over the years. You’ll find them along Arcola Avenue East, covering both eastbound and westbound traffic, specifically nestled between Chuka Boulevard and Woodland Grove Drive. Then there’s the Ring Road, where new cameras are watching northbound and southbound lanes between Winnipeg Street and Albert Street. And finally, Albert Street itself, with enforcement for both northbound and southbound traffic between 25th Avenue and 28th Avenue. These are critical arteries for many of us, so it absolutely makes sense to focus safety efforts here.

Why all this effort, you might ask? Well, it boils down to safety, pure and simple. The automated speed enforcement program isn't just about issuing tickets; it’s really about curbing dangerous driving habits and, ultimately, working towards saving lives. And the numbers, frankly, paint a pretty clear picture of the necessity. Between 2015 and 2023, those very ASE sites witnessed a staggering 2,866 collisions. That resulted in 582 injuries and, heartbreakingly, eight fatalities. When you look at figures like that, it's genuinely hard to argue against measures designed to make our roads less hazardous. Just last year, in 2023 alone, approximately 22,000 speeding tickets were issued across the city, highlighting the persistent challenge of speeding in our community.
