Red Alert Rings Across Odisha as a New Depression Gathers Strength Over the Bay of Bengal

Early this morning a well‑marked low‑pressure area that had been lingering over the north‑west Bay of Bengal finally deepened into a depression. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) quickly upgraded its warnings, slapping a Red Alert on a handful of districts in Odisha and issuing orange and yellow alerts for the rest of the state.

What does a Red Alert mean? In plain language, it signals the possibility of extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm activity and even lightning strikes within the next two days. The districts under the highest alert – Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Angul – should brace for intense downpours that could trigger flash floods in low‑lying tracts and landslides in the hillier zones.

Fishing communities have been told to stay put. The IMD advised that the sea will remain rough for at least four days, so vessels should avoid venturing into deep waters or even the near‑coastal zones. Ports across Odisha have also raised the Local Alert‑Cautionary Signal (LAC‑III) for the next 24 hours as a precaution.

According to IMD’s Bhubaneswar director, Manorama Mohanty, the depression is expected to drift northwestward, gaining strength as it approaches the coastline between Paradeep and Sagar Island. She added that the system could deepen further into a full‑blown cyclonic storm by the forenoon of July 27, bringing not just rain but strong winds as well.

For now, the forecast calls for heavy to very heavy rain on July 26 and 27, with isolated pockets of extremely heavy rainfall. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to keep an eye on local bulletins, stay away from riverbanks, and have evacuation plans ready, just in case.
