RCMP Shooting in Salmo Leaves Man Seriously Injured – Investigation Underway

On the morning of September 3, 2026, a handful of RCMP officers from the southeast district’s emergency response team and the Creston detachment drove out to a quiet property on Ski Hill Road in Salmo. Their purpose? To execute a search warrant that had been issued days earlier.

When the officers arrived, the homeowner – a man in his thirties – was told he was under arrest. He didn’t stay put. Instead, he bolted into a travel trailer parked on the lot, and the officers found themselves in a tense standoff.

According to Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, the RCMP spokesperson, the team tried every reasonable de‑escalation technique they could think of over the course of the morning. They shouted, they used loud‑speaker commands, even tried to negotiate through the trailer’s door. None of those efforts seemed to work.

At one point, an officer peered through the trailer’s entrance and, to his alarm, thought he saw a weapon in the suspect’s hand. That split‑second perception led the officer to fire his service pistol. The shot struck the man, who then fell back inside the trailer before finally emerging about an hour later.

Once he was on the ground, fellow officers provided immediate medical attention. He was then whisked to the nearest hospital with serious injuries, and later air‑lifted to a larger facility for more intensive care.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has opened a formal review of the incident. In a public call‑out, the IIO is asking anyone who captured video of the shooting or the surrounding events to come forward.

While the investigation is ongoing, the RCMP says the use of force was deemed necessary given the officer’s belief that the suspect was armed. No further injuries were reported, and the suspect is now in custody.
