Rainy Labor Day Weekend Looms Over Volusia and Flagler Counties

Well, it looks like Mother Nature decided to give Central Florida a little extra wet‑and‑wild treat this Labor Day weekend.

According to Melissa Watson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne, Volusia County can expect somewhere between one and two inches of rain by Sept. 7, with a “marginal risk” of an even heavier burst—think up to three inches in a single day.

She’s also warning that each day will bring its own share of showers and thunderstorms. Those storms aren’t just gentle drizzles; they could come with frequent lightning, gusty winds and, in spots, locally heavy rain.

In Daytona Beach the odds of rain start at roughly 50 % on Saturday, climb to about 70 % on Sunday, and then jump again to near 80 % on Monday. The heaviest activity is expected after 5 p.m. on Saturday and after 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Temperatures will be scorching—low‑90s during the day—so when you mix that heat with the humidity, the heat index will be nudging the low‑100s, maybe hitting 100‑105 °F.

Just a short drive east, Flagler County isn’t getting a free pass. A “very moist airmass” is hanging over the area, pushing rain chances up to 50 % on Saturday, 70 % on Sunday and a hefty 90 % on Labor Day itself.

Highs will stay in the low‑90s, but the heat index could creep up to about 107 °F, so bring plenty of water and maybe a hat.

Even though the Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet this year—thanks to a strong El Niño—meteorologists are still urging residents to keep their hurricane kits ready. “It only takes one storm to make the season active,” Watson reminded.

Bottom line? Pack an umbrella, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on any flash‑flood warnings. The weekend may be rainy, but with a little preparation it won’t ruin your holiday plans.
