Rain Alert Sweeps Across India: Heavy Showers Expected in UP and Haryana, Yellow Alerts Issued for Noida and Gurugram

India’s weather board, the IMD, has rolled out a fresh rain alert for Sunday, September 6, 2026. A mix of heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms is set to drench parts of the north and the northeast, while a few states in the centre will see lighter downpours.

In the capital region, Delhi itself will stay under a clear sky, but the sky won’t be entirely clear – clouds will hover and moderate rain will come and go. The high today is expected to hover around 31‑33 °C, with night‑time lows sliding to 24‑26 °C. A gentle, over‑cast day is the best description.

Neighbouring NCR cities are not so lucky. Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad have been placed under a yellow alert. That means the rain could be strong enough to cause water‑logging and traffic snarls, but not yet severe enough for a red warning.

And indeed, the last couple of days have already taken a toll. Gurugram saw a near‑10‑km traffic jam on the Delhi‑Gurugram expressway as water piled up on the road. Commuters are being urged to allow extra travel time and keep an eye on live updates.

Beyond the capital, the IMD’s forecast stretches far and wide. Western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are slated for fairly widespread rain, while eastern Uttar Pradesh may see similar conditions from today through Wednesday. Rajasthan’s eastern districts could see isolated heavy bursts.

The monsoon’s reach doesn’t stop there. Northeastern states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura – are all on the radar for heavy showers. In the east, parts of West Bengal, especially the sub‑Himalayan zones, could feel gusty winds up to 40 km/h.

Further south, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are warned of stronger thunderstorms, with lightning and gusts touching 50 km/h at isolated spots. Even the hills of Uttarakhand and the plains of Madhya Pradesh could feel a touch of the storm.

Looking ahead to Monday, the rain won’t disappear entirely, but the intensity is expected to ease. Isolated heavy downpours may linger in the northeast and the hills, while the rest of the country should see a break in the worst of it.

Bottom line for travellers: keep a watchful eye on local bulletins, dress for wet weather, and plan for possible delays, especially around water‑prone zones in Delhi‑NCR.
