Rahul Gandhi Calls on India's Youth to Keep Protesting and Defend the Constitution

Opposition leader pledges support for student activists amid Delhi crackdown

Speaking in Chennai, Rahul Gandhi urged young Indians to stay on the streets, vowed to protect the Constitution and slammed the government for silencing dissent.

During a stop in Chennai for the Congress’ student outreach drive ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, senior opposition figure Rahul Gandhi used his X post to send a clear signal to the nation’s youth. He said the party stands shoulder‑to‑shoulder with young protesters and will keep fighting to safeguard the Constitution.

Gandhi’s remarks came just hours after police in Delhi moved in on a rally organized by the Cockroach Janta Party at Jantar Mantar. Officials said more than 3,000 would‑be demonstrators were stopped, and another 600 people with prior criminal records were held pre‑emptively because the gathering allegedly lacked the necessary permission.

Unfazed, Gandhi challenged the Union government to arrest opposition leaders and students if they wanted – “we won’t back down”, he wrote. He specifically called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, dubbing them the “villains of this story”.

Having “fought” Modi and the RSS for more than a decade, Gandhi said he now understands their tactics “like you would understand your opponent”. He warned that the space for those he named was shrinking because “we are closing that space”.

The opposition leader hinted that his party possessed crucial information about the administration’s moves, though he didn’t spell out what that entailed. What he did spell out was a promise: the Congress will protect the voice of ordinary Indians and prevent a repeat of what he described as a “15‑year slide” for the country.

Gandhi’s message to the nation’s young people was unmistakable – keep protesting, stay loud, and know that the opposition has your back. He even shared a short video of his Chennai speech, hoping it would circulate widely on social media.

While Delhi police maintain that the protest was illegal and that the prohibitory orders were in place across New Delhi, the broader narrative that emerged was one of a restless youth, a determined opposition, and a government keen to clamp down on dissent.
