Rahul Gandhi and G. Kharge Demand Independent Probe into Ayodhya Ram Temple Donation Theft

In a rather pointed letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Congress figures Rahul Gandhi and G. Kharge have asked the government to set up an independent probe into what they describe as a "theft" of donations intended for the Ayodhya Ram Temple.

The two leaders said the silence from the highest echelons of the administration – especially on a matter that touches the sentiments of millions – is simply unacceptable. "Your silence on this issue is a betrayal of public trust," they wrote, urging swift action.

According to the letter, countless devotees across the country have contributed money with the hope that it would be used for the construction and upkeep of the temple complex. Yet, sources close to the matter allege that a sizable chunk of those funds has vanished, with no clear accounting or public disclosure.

Gururaj Kharge, who currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, specifically called for a CBI‑led investigation, arguing that only a body with proven independence can restore faith in the process. Rahul Gandhi echoed the same sentiment, adding that a transparent audit is essential for maintaining the spirit of charitable giving.

"We are not questioning the sanctity of the temple,” the letter emphasized. “What we are demanding is accountability, transparency and a fair inquiry that puts the concerns of the donors at the forefront," the politicians wrote.

The demand comes at a time when the Ayodhya trust, which oversees the temple's finances, has faced criticism for its opacity. Critics have pointed out that the trust’s accounts have not been made publicly available, and there have been rumours of internal rifts among trustees over how the money is being allocated.

While the central government has previously assured the public that the trust will operate within the law, Rahul Gandhi and Kharge argue that assurances alone are not enough. They want a step‑by‑step audit, a public report, and, if necessary, legal action against any individuals found culpable.

Opposition leaders also hinted that a failure to act could become a political flashpoint, especially with upcoming state elections where the issue of corruption and misuse of public money is likely to dominate campaign narratives.

As of now, the Prime Minister’s office has not issued a formal response. The Congress party, however, says it will continue to press the matter, holding the government to its promise of clean governance and accountability.
