Punjab Under Siege: Ravi River Unleashes Fury, Dhussi Bundhs Face Imminent Threat Amidst Deluge

Punjab finds itself in the grip of a severe flood crisis as the mighty Ravi River, swollen by incessant rains, rages against its banks, putting critical Dhussi Bundhs at severe risk. The situation, reminiscent of the devastating 1988 floods, has plunged several districts into chaos, with Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Kapurthala bearing the brunt of nature's wrath.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, personally overseeing the disaster response, conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

He acknowledged the unprecedented challenge posed by the swollen rivers and the need for immediate, coordinated action. The administration has swung into high gear, with officials deployed round-the-clock to monitor water levels, especially along the Dhussi Bundhs – vital embankments protecting vast swathes of land from the Ravi's fury.

The threat of a breach in these bundhs is a constant nightmare, particularly for residents living downstream.

With water levels dangerously close to the bundh tops in numerous locations, including the strategic Gurdaspur and Pathankot sectors, engineers and local volunteers are working tirelessly, shoring up weak points with sandbags and earth. Villages in low-lying areas have already been issued high-alert warnings, with some evacuations already underway as a precautionary measure.

Beyond the immediate threat of riverine flooding, the relentless downpour has triggered a cascade of other disasters.

Landslides have been reported in hilly regions, further complicating rescue efforts and isolating communities. Numerous houses have collapsed, roads have been washed away, and agricultural fields stand submerged, painting a grim picture of widespread destruction and economic loss. The human toll, though currently focused on displacement, carries the heavy burden of lost livelihoods and shattered homes.

Relief operations are intensifying, with authorities establishing temporary relief camps equipped with essential supplies for the displaced.
