Punjab Farmers to Receive Crucial Flood Relief as Centre Confirms Fund Allocation Amidst Devastation

In a significant move to alleviate the suffering of farmers in Punjab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed that crucial financial assistance is being extended to those gravely impacted by recent devastating floods. A central government official has clarified that the necessary funds have already been allocated, aiming to bring much-needed relief to a community grappling with immense agricultural losses.

The announcement comes as Punjab's agricultural sector continues to reel from successive waves of floods that have wreaked havoc on vast tracts of farmland.

Key crops such as cotton and paddy, which form the backbone of the state's economy, have suffered extensive damage, pushing many farmers to the brink. The central government had previously released Rs 218.28 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the floods that struck in July 2023, signaling an initial step towards recovery.

However, the scale of devastation has led the Punjab government to seek a more substantial package.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had personally met with Prime Minister Modi, presenting a detailed assessment of the damage and appealing for special financial aid. The state government estimated losses of Rs 1,500 crore from the July floods alone and a staggering Rs 14,828 crore in total from two major flood waves that swept through the region, emphasizing the need for an extraordinary intervention.

In response to Punjab's persistent demand for a special package, the Union Agriculture Ministry has reiterated that central assistance is primarily disbursed through established mechanisms like the SDRF and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

They maintained that Punjab has already received its due share and possesses significant unspent funds from previous allocations. This perspective highlights a difference in opinion between the state, which perceives the existing mechanisms as insufficient for the current crisis, and the Centre, which points to established guidelines and existing resources.

A central team had conducted an on-ground assessment of the damage, scrutinizing the extent of crop destruction.

While the central government provides compensation at a rate of Rs 6,800 per acre for crop damage, the Punjab government has taken an additional step to support its farmers, enhancing this amount to Rs 17,000 per acre from its own coffers. This disparity underscores the urgency felt by the state to provide higher compensation to its affected agricultural workforce.

As farmers in Punjab look towards rebuilding their lives and livelihoods, this confirmed allocation of flood relief brings a ray of hope.
