Punjab CM Mann Vows to Protect Arhtiyas' Interests Amidst DBT Concerns, Promises Central Intervention

In a pivotal meeting that underscored the deep-rooted complexities of Punjab's agricultural ecosystem, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently convened with a delegation of arhtiyas (commission agents), extending a firm assurance that their long-standing interests would be vigorously safeguarded. The heart of the discussion revolved around the contentious Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) payment system for farmers, a policy that has cast a long shadow of uncertainty over the traditional role and livelihoods of these vital intermediaries.

The arhtiyas, representing a critical link in the agricultural supply chain, voiced their profound apprehensions.

They fear that the DBT scheme, which routes payments directly to farmers' bank accounts, threatens to dismantle their established financial relationship with cultivators and undermine their historical position as pillars of the rural economy. Their plea to CM Mann was clear: intervene and advocate for the reversal of this policy, which they believe jeopardizes their very existence.

Responding to their anxieties, CM Mann adopted a reassuring stance, emphasizing the irreplaceable contribution of arhtiyas to the state's agricultural prosperity.

He unequivocally stated that the Punjab government is fully committed to protecting their rights and ensuring their financial stability. "We will not allow anyone to trample upon the rights of arhtiyas," the Chief Minister declared, highlighting their generations-old bond with farmers and their pivotal role in facilitating smooth procurement operations.

Mann not only acknowledged their concerns but also promised to personally escalate their demands to the central government.

He specifically pointed to the timely payment of over Rs 18,300 crore for wheat procurement directly into farmers’ accounts, a testament to the improved efficiency.
