Pune Wages War on Illegal Encroachments: Reclaiming Public Spaces

Pune is witnessing a sweeping transformation as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) flexes its muscles in a major crackdown against illegal encroachments. The city's civic body has launched an extensive demolition drive, sending a clear message: public spaces are for the public, and unauthorized structures will no longer be tolerated.

The targets are widespread and diverse, ranging from makeshift stalls, often referred to as 'tapparis', to oversized, illicit hoardings and extensions from shops that spill onto pedestrian walkways.

Major arterial roads across Pune are at the forefront of this clean-up operation. Areas like Karve Road, Sinhagad Road, Tilak Road, Bajirao Road, Shivaji Road, Laxmi Road, Jangali Maharaj Road, and Fergusson College Road are experiencing a renewed sense of order as PMC teams meticulously dismantle obstructions.

The initial phase of the drive has already yielded significant results. On Karve Road and Sinhagad Road alone, PMC teams have reportedly demolished 27 temporary stalls, brought down 36 unauthorized hoardings, and cleared a staggering 115 illegal encroachments.

The operation also involved the seizure of goods, necessitating the deployment of 12 trucks to transport the confiscated materials.
