Prime Minister Mark Carney lauds Hindu Canadians at Calgary’s Dhanteras gala

When the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce (CHCC) rolled out its annual Dhanteras gala in Calgary this August, the night sparkled not just with lights but with a heartfelt message from Prime Minister Mark Carney. In a video greeting that felt more like a friendly chat than a formal address, Carney reminded everyone that Hindu Canadians have quietly, and sometimes loudly, helped shape the country’s future.

“Across Canada, Hindu Canadians have made significant contributions to the growth of our communities,” he said, pausing a beat before adding, “Their impact can be seen in everything from information technology and software development to healthcare, engineering and public service.” The tone was sincere, a little bit proud, and definitely inclusive – a nod to the multicultural tapestry that Canada likes to tout.

The Prime Minister went on to describe the gala itself as “a recognition of the remarkable contributions of this vibrant community.” He praised the “values, traditions, and spirit of service” that, in his view, continue to strengthen Canada’s diverse and inclusive society. It was the kind of comment that makes a room of entrepreneurs and community leaders nod in agreement.

Alberta’s own Premier Danielle Smith welcomed CHCC members with the usual warm‑hearted political flourish: “Entrepreneurs and job creators like you supply the innovative spirit, resilience and resolve that help keep Alberta – and Canada – growing strong.” A similar sentiment echoed from the opposition bench, where Leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre lauded the community’s “success in business, commitment to giving back and dedication to preserving a vibrant cultural heritage.” Both messages, though coming from different sides of the aisle, highlighted a shared belief that cultural diversity fuels economic growth.

Other provincial leaders chimed in as well. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe sent congratulatory notes, reinforcing the nationwide appreciation for the Hindu community’s role in Canada’s story.

The evening also turned into an awards ceremony. Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a senior Pakistani parliamentarian and noted minority leader, received the CHCC Global Hindu award. Former MLA Peter Singh, of Fijian descent, was honoured with the President’s Award. In a nod to gender and entrepreneurship, former Alberta cabinet minister Leela Aheer took home the Inspiring Women of Excellence award, while Dr Hasmukh Patel – a doctor turned construction magnate – was celebrated with a Lifetime Achievement honour.

As the night wound down, the underlying message was clear: the Hindu community, with its blend of innovation, leadership and cultural pride, is an integral thread in Canada’s social and economic fabric. And, as Carney’s words reminded everyone, that thread only gets stronger when we recognise and celebrate it together.
