President Trump's Bold Decree: Lake Ontario Now 'Lake America'

Well, it seems President Donald Trump, never one to shy away from a grand gesture, has done it again. In a move that's bound to ripple across the international stage, especially with our neighbors to the north, he’s officially ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario. From now on, at least according to his directive, it’s to be known as "Lake America."

The executive order, signed just yesterday, August 27, 2026, right there in the Oval Office, wasn't just a sudden whim, though it might appear that way to some. It came amidst a rather spiraling trade war that's been brewing between the United States and Canada for a good while now. And President Trump, now 80 years old, didn't mince words when explaining his rationale. He cited what he called "nasty" treatment from Canadian officials as the primary reason for this rather dramatic geographical rebrand.

Now, here's the rub: Lake Ontario isn't exclusively American. Oh no, it's a vital body of water shared by both the United States and Canada. So, as you can imagine, the folks up north are probably not going to just shrug this off and go along with it. In fact, it's widely expected that Canada will be, shall we say, rather unlikely to accept this unilateral name change. This could certainly add another layer of complexity to an already strained relationship.

This isn't the first time President Trump has tried his hand at a bit of geographical re-naming, either. Back in January 2025, he issued a similar order concerning the Gulf of Mexico, insisting it be called the "Gulf of America." And remember how Google Maps handled that one? Within about a month, by February 2025, Google actually updated its platform for users within the United States, displaying "Gulf of America," while international users still saw both names. It's a curious precedent, to say the least, and makes one wonder if Lake Ontario will see a similar digital identity crisis.

As if to underscore the sheer breadth of his vision, President Trump also reportedly mused about potentially renaming the Atlantic and/or Pacific Oceans in the future. One can only imagine the global headlines that would generate. For now, however, the focus remains firmly on Lake Ontario, or as it's now officially known in Washington, D.C., "Lake America." It certainly puts a new spin on cross-border diplomacy, doesn't it?
