Prakash Ambedkar Urges Statewide Bandh on July 23 in Solidarity with CJP Protest

On Sunday, veteran Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar took to the streets of Mumbai, demanding a full‑scale bandh across Maharashtra on July 23. He said the strike is meant to back the Christian Janata Party (CJP) protest that has been gathering momentum over the past week.

"I appeal to all like‑minded parties, organisations and the common man to join us in this peaceful shutdown," Ambedkar told a crowd gathered outside his office. His tone was earnest, almost pleading – a reminder that the issue isn’t merely political, but touches on social grievances that have lingered for years.

The CJP, whose members have been rallying against what they describe as “systemic marginalisation,” scheduled a march in Pune earlier this month. Ambedkar said the bandh would amplify their voice, ensuring that the state government cannot simply brush the concerns aside.

He also warned that any attempt to ignore the strike could deepen existing fault lines in Maharashtra’s already volatile political landscape. "We are not asking for anything radical – just a day of solidarity," he added, pausing briefly as a few reporters jotted down his words.

Various opposition outfits have already signalled tentative support. The Shiv Sena (Uddhav) faction, the Indian National Congress, and a handful of regional parties are said to be in informal talks with Ambedkar’s team. Critics, however, argue that a bandh could disrupt daily life for millions – commuters, traders, and students alike. The state’s transport department has hinted at deploying additional security personnel to manage any potential chaos.
