Power Outage Hits Joliet After Pickup Smashes Utility Pole; Drivers Flee the Scene

If you live near the intersection of Essington Road and Ingalls Avenue, you probably spent a few restless hours in the dark on Saturday morning. Around 2:26 a.m., a pickup truck careened off the north side of Ingalls Avenue, slammed into a utility pole, knocked over a fence and finally came to rest in the backyard of a house on Cassie Drive.

The impact was enough to trip the local power line, leaving the surrounding block without electricity for several hours. Neighbors reported flickering lights, a sudden silence from their appliances, and an eerie glow from streetlights that were suddenly out.

Joliet police spokesperson Dwayne English told reporters that after the crash, both the driver – a male – and his male passenger jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Officers combed the area, checking the driveway, nearby sidewalks and even the surrounding woods, but the two men disappeared before they could be located.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash. The only tangible damage was the broken pole and the resulting power outage, which the utility company managed to restore later in the morning. Residents were left to rely on flashlights and a few charged phones while they waited.

The incident is still under investigation. Police are asking anyone who saw the crash, captured video, or might know who was driving the truck to call the Joliet Police Traffic Unit at (815) 724‑3010. Even a blurry TikTok clip could be the piece that helps them track down the suspects.

Until then, the neighborhood is hoping for a quick return to normal – lights humming, refrigerators humming, and a sense that the street is safe again.
